L.A. summer camp programs and opportunities for kids and teens

San Diego Has a Camp Fair, Too!

While this blog and website predominantly feature summer camps in Los Angeles, we know families from all over southern California and elsewhere visit our site every day. So we'd be remiss if we didn't share other summer camp resources and information we come across that we feel might be useful to you.

Accordingly, we wanted to let you know about the San Diego Camp Fair and Expo taking Saturday, February 23 at Balboa Park near downtown San Diego.

We felt San Diego's close enough to L.A. where some of our readers might be interested in making the quick drive down south to see what the Camp Fair offers.  You can get your free tickets here

How Does a Comedy Summer Camp Sound?

1/26/2019

We're always on the lookout to find cool new summer camp programs to share with you. (Well, they might not actually be new...but they're new to us!)

Anyway, we wanted to turn you on to the Second City Comedy Camps in Hollywood where you child can spend part of their summer doing improv and writing comedy...at summer camp!
second city comedy camps
This looks like a pretty fun program! Campers exercise their sense of play through improv games and exercises that are the foundation of The Second City’s unique brand of comedy.  (I remember watching Second City Comedy on TV as a kid...so cool!)

While your child's at camp, the Second City camp counselors and teachers will work with your young "improviser "to help enhance their ability to communicate with others and develop confidence in their own creativity. Campers work as part of an ensemble which improves their teamwork skills. Camps end with a show where the students show off what they’ve learned. Parent will love seeing the result of their campers' experience!

If you're interested in this program, one thing we noticed from their website is that they appear to fill up pretty quickly because their camps attract campers and students from all over the world to learn improv, make friends, and perform on stage. No previous experience is needed. But check them out as soon as you can so you can lock in space for this summer. Let us know how it goes!

100's of Summer Programs for Kids Represented at L.A. Camp Fair 2019

Many of the top summer camps in Los Angeles -- and other phenomenal programs from throughout the state, other states, and even from other and countries -- will come together to exhibit their programs for L.A. area families at three summer Camp Fair expo events on Saturday, March 9 at UCLA, Sunday, March 10 in Los Feliz, and Sunday, April 7 in Calabasas, respectively.

These three events -- collectively known as "L.A. Camp Fair 2019"--  is organized by Eric Naftulin and Megan Cassidy,  two Los Angeles residents with years of background experience in the summer camp field.
L.A. Summer Camp Fair Picture
Los Angeles families, parents, children, and grandparents are invited to attend one, two, or all three Camp Fairs to meet representatives from the participating programs and learn about their camps.

"Attending the L.A. Camp Fair is like finding a "one-stop shop" to learn about all the best summer camp opportunities in L.A. this summer," Cassidy said. "Over 120 camps are exhibiting at the Camp Fairs. There will be some crossover among participating camps,  with some of the programs exhibiting at all three of the Camp Fairs, but others might be showcasing their programs at only one or two events.  In order to become familiar with all the available summer camp options, we recommended families attend all three Camp Fairs so you don't miss anything."

According to Cassidy, the Camp Fairs are free, but you'll need tickets to get in because the Camp Fairs typically draw large crowds.

Families Can Learn About Many Different Kinds of Camps at the L.A. Camp Fair

L.A. Camp Fair 2019 features an impressive lineup of many different kinds of summer programs from all over Los Angeles and elsewhere.  "Families are guaranteed to find the perfect camp for their child at the Camp Fair, no matter what kind of camp they might be looking for," Naftulin said. "There will be programs exhibiting at the L.A. Camp Fair to match every child's interests. You'll find day camps to sleepaway camps and beach camps to dance camps and every kind of camp in between."

According to Naftulin, families won't only be impressed with the various kinds of camps at L.A. Camp Fair, but also where the various programs are based. "Local families will discover dozens of summer camps in L.A. that interest them," Naftulin said. "But there will also be many summer camp exhibitors from San Diego, northern California, Maine, New Hampshire, and even Canada. So if you're thinking of sending your child to a sleepaway camp a little further away, attending the Camp Fair will be extremely worthwhile for you," Naftulin said.

L.A. Camp Fair Provides Unique Opportunity to Meet Camp Representatives Face-to-Face

If you're really looking for the number one reason to attend the L.A. Camp Fair, Megan Cassidy says it's the benefit of meeting the people who will be caring for your kids this summer face-to-face.

"Dozens of camps will be represented at the Camp Fair," Cassidy said, "So you'll be able to learn about all these spectacular summer programs for your kids.  You can pick up free brochures and your kids can do sample activities at all the Camp Fair booths and all that. But let's face it, nothing beats the opportunity to have a real, face-to-face comprehensive conversation with all the prospective Camp Directors who could very well be supervising your kids this summer. That's the primary purpose of the L.A. Camp Fair -- to give you an opportunity to spend as much time as you need with all the various camp representatives and get all your questions answered so you can make an informed decision about where to send your kids to camp."

Over 1,000 Families Expected to Attend L.A. Camp Fair

The L.A. Camp Fair has become a popular activity and valuable resource among Los Angeles looking for the top summer programs for kids each summer.  At the same time, the each of the Camp Fair venues has limited capacity space, so it's important to get your free tickets ahead of time to make sure you're not turned away at the door. As long as you get your tickets in advance, you will be confirmed to any or all of the Camp Fair events that interest you.

"Make sure you get your Camp Fair tickets today," Cassidy said. "They're going fast!"

Discover Phoenix Ranch Day Camp, an ACA Accredited Summer Camp

We're big fans of American Camp Association (ACA) accredited programs.

While camps that have not achieved accreditation are not necessarily any worse than those that have, we generally recommend choosing an accredited camp because this is your best guarantee you're picking a program that meets the highest safety and operational standards in the entire summer camp industry.  You can learn more about camp accreditation here.

Families who live in Calabasas and nearby communities can lean about many accredited camp opportunities at the upcoming L.A. Camp Fair at AC Stelle Middle School on April 7.

One of the programs exhibiting at the Calabasas Camp Fair is Phoenix Ranch Day Camp, is an accredited camp with the ACA.

Located in Simi Valley, Phoenix Ranch Day Camp is preparing an incredible experience for Summer 2019 for campers kindergarten through 8th grade.  They offer a wide variety of programs including drama, archery, go-karts, sports, arts & crafts, nature study, dress-ups, theme days, workshops, game room, swimming and much more.  Even though it's a day camp program, Phoenix Ranch also offers 5 day / 4 night sleepover adventures during the summer, too.

Seem like a great time all around! So if you would like to learn more about this program or other camp opportunities available for your child this summer, head on out to the Camp Fair on April 7. You can meet staff representatives from Phoenix Ranch Day Camp and many other accredited (and non-accredited) summer camp programs.

Science Summer Camps Are All the Rage

1/7/2019

It's been a rainy few days here in L.A., with more rain predicted for this coming weekend. But that hasn't stopped anyone from searching for summer camps. The number of visitors to our website is increasing by hundreds each day, which means families are starting to think about camp.

Kids have so many different options when it comes to choosing a summer camp in Los Angeles. It's not just the quantity of available programs (there's a LOT of them) that makes a summer camp search so exciting, but also the kinds of camps available makes us old folk wish we were kids again so we could go back in time to experience all the amazing opportunities available to campers each summer.

Take Science Camps, for instance. We sure don't remember those when we were growing up, but low and behold, these days science camps are among the most popular types of camps among today's kids.

And if you want to really see some of the incredible science camp options your child can enjoy, don't miss the L.A. Camp Fair events this March and April.

The Camp Fair is kind of like a boat show, wedding expo or tattoo expo, except it's just for camps! In fact over 100 different Los Angeles area camps and programs will be on display at the the L.A. Camp Fair. And the Camp Fair is taking place at three different locations for your convenience this year as follows:

  • L.A. Camp Fair at UCLA on Saturday, March 9
  • L.A. Camp Fair at Los Feliz on Sunday, March 10
  • L.A. Camp Fair in Calabasas on Sunday, April 7

When you come to the Camp Fair, you'll find all kinds of summer camp options for your child, including many science summer camps for your family to consider.

Discover Mad Science Summer Camp

Now just getting back to the science camp opportunities available to your child this summer, one of the ones that intrigues us is called Mad Science. We've heard from a number of parents, kids and families that Mad Science Summer Camp is one of the best science camps in L.A. around. Here's what we know about the program.

Mad Science offers a variety of camps for children between 6 and 12 years of age. Each camp is designed to engage active learning, promote inquiry-based interaction with the camps's "scientists" (camp counselors!) while entertaining campers' imaginations.

Mad Science camps are comprised of structured curriculum and content, and they incorporate various themes including: space, rocketry, robotics and robots, the environment, biology, kinesiology, and much more!

When your child attends this program, they will enjoy simple, real world science techniques that allow them to enjoy the entire Mad Science experience. Full and half-day camp options are available and deliver a fun-filled week consisting of: in-class discovery and exploration, outdoor games with physical activities, and hands-on exploration of the scientific principles being presented. Campers are able to touch, see, hear, smell and taste what science is really all about as they play various games, perform crazy experiments, and participate in various demonstrations. To continue the fun at home, Mad Science provides an interactive take-home project, on either a daily or weekly basis.

How to Get More Information on Local Science Summer Camps

If a science program interests your child, be sure to attend the L.A. Camp Fair. You'll be able to meet all the "scientists" from the Mad Science program plus learn about many other science programs here in L.A.  Not only that, your child will be able to do all kinds of fun science experiments at all the different camp fair booths, so be sure not to miss this exciting event. As you may know, L.A.SummerCamps.com is sponsoring several Camp Fair expos this year where you can meet and greet camp directors, counselors and staff from hundreds of local camps and learn about their programs.

Attending a Camp Fair is an ideal way to become familiar with many of the best summer programs available to your kids this year as over 100 camps come together under one roof to showcase their programs and activities for you.
Clickable button link to get free L.A. Camp Fair tickets
But it's not just the sheer number of camps exhibiting at the L.A. Camp Fair that will impress you. You'll also enjoy learning about all the various kinds of camps.  For example, your mind might already be made up that you're sending your child to a traditional overnight camp this summer.  In that case, you'll want to come to the Camp Fair to discover all the various overnight camp opportunities for your kids. But, you know what? Once you get to the Camp Fair and see all the other amazing camp opportunities out there, you might quickly change your mind!

Here's a case in point. A parent (mom) called us on the phone today asking if we could share some insight about any potential music camps in L.A. this summer because her daughter wanted to improve her panio  She was looking for a music camp for her daughter.

As we got deeper into the conversation, this mom told us her daughter also liked to dance, so we told her she should come to the camp fair because there will be a number of dance camps exhibiting their programs at the Camp Fair.

Two of the dance camps we told her about -- and we thought you might be interested in hearing about, too -- are Dance Studio No. 1 and  Stellar Dance Studio. Both of these programs sound quite intriguing for any boy or girl who might be interested in a dancing summer camp this year.

Here's a little more info about the two programs.

Dance Studio No. 1

Eight kids dancing at Dance Studio No. 1 summer camp.
Dance Studio No. 1, located in West Los Angeles, offers several camps and weekly dance classes throughout the summer. The camp's ever-popular Disney Dance Camp gives students the opportunity to perform at the most magical place on Earth: Disneyland! Our weekly dance classes include ballet, modern, hip hop, show jazz, and acro. Summer is a great time to get in shape, learn new skills, or try something new. And you sure can't beat performing at Disneyland...what a treat!

If you are interested in learning more about Dance Studio No. 1's programs, you can meet their staff at the Saturday, March 9 L.A. Camp Fair at UCLA.

Stellar Dance Studio

Stellar Dance Studio offers two different kinds of dance camps. The first is a themed dance camp, the other a Dance Intensive Camp.

Their themed dance camps are designed for younger dancers who have already taken or are interested in enrolling in recreational classes throughout the year. Each week of camp has a different theme relating to popular movies or characters, and campers perform a show for parents and friends at the end of each week. In addition to dance instruction, our camps include arts & crafts, games, and other theme-related activities that are sure to engage and excite every young dancer throughout the summer.

Their dance intensive summer camps are designed for experience dancers or who may be interested in getting involved with our competitive dance program. These camps consist of instructional classes in a variety of different styles including jazz, hip-hop, and ballet. The intensive’s curriculum includes multiple dance classes a day, which requires focus and dedication, but dancers typically see the benefit of their hard work when they notice significant improvement in their dance technique over a short period of time. While the program includes structured and challenging classes throughout the entire week of camp, Stellar Dance Studio maintains a fun and supportive environment for your child’s passion for dance to flourish.

Stellar Dance Studio will be exhibiting its programs at the L.A. Camp Fair in Los Feliz on Sunday, March 10. Get your free tickets to the Los Feliz Camp Fair today.
